Corey
Corey’s connection with cars was obvious as it was never a problem placing him into his baby seat in my mini cooper S. But his natural ability to manoeuvre a car became apparent after we bought him an electric car for his 6th birthday. We sat him in it, at the bottom of the inclined driveway, before I could react he’d pressed the floor mounted button and the car flew up the drive heading towards the road. Thinking he wasn’t going to turn and drive into the road, I ran up the driveway, as I got to within an arm’s length of grabbing the seat he’d turned right and then drove downhill approximately three house lengths and proceed to manoeuvre the car around to head back up hill. I just laughed.
Most days after that Corey would drive around the kitchen doing three-point turns and parallel parking against the kitchen wall in between, tiny little cars, his grandad used to say “that lad is a professional.”
Fast forward to 2018, we’d previously attended numerous F1 races in various continents, I set Corey a challenge to attain decent mock exam grades and I’ll get him into Go-karting (I’ll expand on this point in the future). I researched local Irish kart clubs and found Tullyallen kart club, we went to their race meeting and I did what I do, spoke to people, an got a few numbers of guys who could source a kart. One of those guys was Tim Murray, I arranged a test drive for Corey, on a first test drive Corey drove as if he’d been driving for years, more to the point Tim said his lap times where comparable to the experienced drivers moreover, Corey set consistent lap times. So I bought the kart and we joined the club and entered the 1st race.
In a nutshell it poured with rain. Being a novice Corey had to start every race from the back of the grid, by lap 3 Corey was in 2nd place, his ability to stay on the track when others couldn’t, eventually awarded with him 4th place. That season Corey went on to attain 4 podiums, best driver trophy, multiple wins, taking 4th place in his first championship race season, and that’s after missing two races.
This is our 3rd year karting and Corey is currently competing in the Daniel Riccardo UK series. Corey still resides in the Republic of Ireland and flies to the U.K. for practice, and race weekends. It’s our aim to finish within the top 3 this season, as were currently in 4th place after the first round.
